CAN OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD BE IMPROVED?

Updated: Apr 18

As we move about the arena of Christian living and all that comes along with that, such as church attendance, Bible studies, or just conversation with other Jesus followers, many times we will hear talk of “working on our relationship with God.” We may have attended classes on, “Improving your relationship with God,” The question is, “can our relationship with God be improved?”

The simple answer is No! This actually reflects our improper use of the English language. We are not as astute as we should be in our dialogue with others and maybe with God as well. Many times we improperly switch the word “relationship” for the word “fellowship.” We would never be so flippant with words if we were writing our Will of if we were writing a contract. Every word would be scrutinized for intent and accuracy.

We should always study the Holy Scriptures, as a fine tuned Lawyer would examine a Will or a contract! Every word is highly important. The sentence structure is highly important. Also, in our English language every punctuation mark is highly important. In like manner, that which we say out of out mouth is highly important. God operates the universe by His spoken Word and we are created in His likeness so we operate our sphere of life by our spoken word.

How many times have we heard someone say something that is very improper or faddish and when we correct him or her we get an answer like, “well God knows what I meant!”

Well the bad news here is that God cannot respond and operate on what we meant or on our good intentions or on our well-intentioned emotions! God can only operate on our behalf by the words that proceed out of our mouth. More bad news, God does not use “spell check.” God cannot change what we have spoken!

There has been Laws Suits galore and fortunes lost over improper use of the English language in Wills, contracts and other legal business documents.  We should give this much consideration and apply this line of thinking toward the words we speak out of our mouth and how we speak the Word of God.

Why is the New Testament entitled as such? Because it is the Last Will and Testament of the Jesus Christ! The NT is a legal document and upheld and enforced by the Courts of Heaven. Jesus Christ is the only person who has ever been the “Executor” of his or her own Will! That’s wild stuff!

Let’s examine the word “relationship” and “fellowship” in the English language and learn some particulars.

Relationship 1. The state of being related by birth, marriage, kindred or other affinity or alliance.

Fellowship 1.a. The condition of sharing similar interests, ideals, or experiences, as by reason of profession, religion, or nationality. b. The companionship of individuals in a congenial atmosphere and on equal terms. 2. A close association of friends or equals sharing similar interests. 3. Friendship; comradeship.

In the natural realm of marriage a husband and a wife may decide to start a family. When a child is born unto them, the Birth Certificate will state the husband’s name as “Father” and will state the wife’s name as “Mother” and the child born will be stated as “Son” or “Daughter”, whichever is the case. Those are fixed affinities and they will never change! Relationship cannot be worked on or improved! It is fixed!

The same is true with a marriage. The male is defined as the “husband” and the female is defined as the “wife.” The relationship is defined and will not change.

On the contrary, fellowship is a whole different condition. How many husbands and wives do we know who have sons and daughters who have either limited fellowship or no fellowship with their offspring? Their relationship has not changed in the least but fellowship is sometimes totally lacking.

Let’s examine the legality of the new birth when we are born again (or born from above). When any “whosoever” believes in his or her heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and confess that fact with their mouth, they become a new creation. They become “sons” of God. There is actually a linage change that takes place from the first Adam to the linage of the last Adam, who is Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Our relationship with God is now “sons”! That is not going to change, wavier or become weak or stale! We have no need to work on our relationship with God because it is fixed at the new birth. By the way, there are no “daughters of God” in the body of Christ. Even “sons of God” does not refer to gender. “Sons of God” refer to a position and not gender. Females as well as males are “sons” in the kingdom of God.

John 1:12 But as many (males or females) as received him, to them (males or females) gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them (males or females) that believe on his name:

Gal 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Realizing that our relationship as “sons of God” is fixed and cannot be altered, changed, wavier or become weak or stale then that should cause us to give great attention to that which can be altered, changed, wavier or become weak or stale and that is our “fellowship” with God our Father, with our Lord Jesus Christ, with The Holy Spirit and our attention given to the Word of God. God is always ready and willing to “fellowship” with us! He will never leave us nor forsake us but can we say the same about our self, concerning our “fellowship” with Him. If we get to a place where we do not feel close to God, then guess who moved?

Heb 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Forsake 1. To give up (something formerly held dear); renounce. 2. To leave altogether; abandon.

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Our fellowship with God can be improved by how much effort we are willing to draw near to God through His Word and time spent in His presence and in fellowship with Him!

Grace and Peace multiplied in the name of Jesus.
